Web auction site launches rival to eBay

An Internet auction service is promising shoppers better prices than ebay by turning its rivals business model on its head.

On eBay, shoppers bid against each other for the wanted item, invariably pushing up the price. On the new site, called Saveoo, it is the dealers who are doing the bidding, competing against each other to offer the lowest price to a potential buyer. Even when the lowest price has been set, the buyer can still walk away from the deal.

Saveoo is the brainchild of Tony Perry, who used to run a reverse auction website for businesses. For years firms have used the process to buy, for example, the cheapest possible office furniture. “It suddenly struck me there was nothing stopping us using the same idea for consumers,” said Mr Perry.

He believes his website will have the edge over eBay
when it comes to expensive big purchases such as a car, a luxury watch or a new washing machine.
